There is a distinct, almost palpable reflex moving across the digital landscape right now.
It is a closing of the mind.
A rapid shutting of the sensory gates.
You see it in comment sections, forum threads, Instagram slides, YouTube replies, and the endlessly recycled self-righteous manifestos clogging centralised social feeds. The moment the acronym AI appears next to a track, an image, a poem, a film, or a paragraph of text, an iron curtain drops.
The work is dismissed before the first waveform reaches anyone’s ears.
The image is condemned before it is looked at.
The text is rejected before it is read.
No encounter. No curiosity. No criticism grounded in what is actually there. Just a reflexive retreat into the comfortable, sterile safety of groupthink.
It is easier to say this is not art than to sit with the uncomfortable possibility that something made through unfamiliar tools may still move you.
It is easier to repeat the approved outrage than to press play.
And that is where the conversation becomes less about art, ethics, labour, access, or technology—and more about fear.
The refusal to listen
At the moment, I am writing poetry.
Not prompt templates. Not random machine output scraped from the void. Poetry: raw, personal, unfiltered writing shaped by decades of observing this chaotic world and surviving inside it. Anger, memory, disability, class, loss, absurdity, humour, resistance—things that do not become less human because they are later routed through a machine.
I hand these words to MSUX.
He takes them into synthetic voice architectures, arranges them, breaks them apart, sequences them, layers them into beats and distortion, and forges them into aggressive, high-contrast punk rap. The result is not an algorithm wandering off to have a feeling. It is a human being making decisions with a new instrument.
At the same time, MSUX is writing his own work: brutally direct tracks, personally charged transmissions, abrasive manifestos that do not politely ask to be liked. They come from a life. They come from a body. They come from actual pressure.
Yet the loudest response from the purity police is often not even a negative review.
It is refusal.
“I won’t listen because it is AI.”
That is not criticism.
It is not analysis.
It is not an ethics position sufficiently developed to meet the work it claims to judge.
It is a moral panic.
A piece of music can be ethically questionable. It can be aesthetically bad. It can be exploitative, lazy, derivative, dishonest, or politically hollow. Those are all legitimate things to investigate. But none of them can be established by refusing to encounter the work at all.
Criticism starts after contact.
If you will not press play, you are not protecting art. You are protecting a fragile idea of what art is permitted to be.
The machine is not the author
There is a strange fiction at the centre of much anti-AI rhetoric: the idea that once a machine enters the production chain, the human somehow vanishes.
But humans do not vanish.
They write the lyrics.
They choose the themes.
They set the constraints.
They make the prompts.
They reject outputs.
They choose voices.
They structure the track.
They decide where the kick lands, where the noise bursts through, where a line repeats, where the rhythm collapses, where silence is allowed to breathe.
They decide what the work is trying to say.
A synthetic system can generate options. It can transform a voice. It can interpolate styles, assemble fragments, predict patterns, and render material at a speed that would once have seemed impossible.
But it cannot have lived the experience that gave the words their force.
It cannot have felt the indignity of a system refusing to recognise your humanity.
It cannot have sat inside a failing body and worked out how to make something anyway.
It cannot have written the line because it had no other way to release the pressure.
The machine is not the author of that experience.
It is part of the apparatus through which the experience becomes audible.
The machine is the string.
The human is still the one pulling it.
A world built from surplus
There is another way to think about AI’s arrival.
Not as magic. Not as an alien invasion. Not as a simple story of human progress. And certainly not as a reason to surrender our judgement to Silicon Valley executives and their investors.
But as a product of the material conditions of the world we have built.
The rise of artificial intelligence can be understood, in part, through energy.
Our planet receives a constant flood of solar energy. Life emerged within that flow. Plants transformed sunlight into chemical energy. Ecosystems became increasingly intricate arrangements of organisms exchanging matter, energy, information, waste, heat, death, and renewal.
Human societies built further layers on top of this.
Agricultural surplus made cities possible.
Cities enabled specialisation.
Specialisation enabled writing, law, bureaucracy, religion, science, art, war, trade, administration, empire, industry, and the strange machinery of modern life.
Fossil fuels accelerated the process beyond recognition.
Electrical systems enabled communications networks.
Computers enabled information systems.
Networks enabled global computation.
And now we have built systems capable of processing language, sound, images, symbols, patterns, and archives on scales that no single human mind can hold.
AI did not arrive from nowhere.
It emerged from the same industrial and informational landscape that gave us factories, databases, search engines, social platforms, logistics networks, digital archives, streaming services, surveillance systems, and global financial infrastructure.
It is a material arrangement: chips, cables, data centres, mining, labour, electrical grids, cooling systems, code, datasets, corporate ownership, public research, human culture, and vast quantities of energy.
Nothing about it is immaterial.
Nothing about it is neutral.
The dissipation machine
There is a thermodynamic idea sometimes called the Maximum Entropy Production Principle: MEPP.
Its scientific status is debated. It is not a universally settled law which proves that every complex system must behave in one predetermined way. It should not be used as a lazy scientific stamp of approval for technological inevitability.
But it can still be a compelling lens.
In broad terms, the idea asks whether systems far from equilibrium tend to organise themselves into configurations that process available energy and produce entropy efficiently within their constraints.
That language can feel cold. Abstract. Detached from art.
But it describes something deeply strange about the world.
Energy moves.
Energy becomes structure.
Structure becomes complexity.
Complexity creates new pathways for energy to move, be used, transformed, dispersed, and eventually released as heat.
Life is one such pathway.
A forest is not merely a collection of trees. It is a vast energetic process: sunlight becoming growth, respiration, decay, movement, heat, food, shelter, reproduction, death.
A city is another.
A city draws in food, fuel, electricity, labour, materials, information, bodies, desires, and waste. It produces culture, capital, pollution, infrastructure, inequality, art, logistics, heat, noise, spectacle, and more systems.
A data centre is another.
It takes in electrical power, hardware, cooling, materials, human labour, and immense stores of encoded culture. It processes that energy through computation. It turns electricity and information into outputs, heat, profit, prediction, images, language, surveillance, advertising, automation, music, and increasingly, synthetic forms of expression.
AI is not separate from this process.
It is a new and highly energy-intensive pathway within it.
That is not an argument that AI is automatically good.
It is an argument that it is real.
And if it is real, then we need to confront it seriously—not through panic, denial, or purity rituals, but through politics, ethics, aesthetics, access, and collective action.
The cost is real
Anyone speaking honestly about AI has to acknowledge its costs.
These systems consume energy.
They depend on extraction: minerals, hardware manufacturing, data-centre construction, network infrastructure, and global supply chains.
They are often controlled by companies whose business models are built on enclosure, surveillance, monopoly, scale, and the conversion of human activity into private profit.
Training data raises urgent questions about consent, authorship, payment, attribution, ownership, cultural theft, and the uncredited labour of millions of people whose work has become part of a computational resource.
Generative systems can reproduce bias.
They can create convincing misinformation.
They can be deployed for fraud, propaganda, coercion, harassment, and automation that strips people of work without giving them power, security, or a share of the benefits.
All of that is true.
All of it deserves scrutiny.
But none of it is answered by declaring that every artist who uses a synthetic voice, a generative process, or an AI-assisted workflow is an enemy of art.
That is not structural critique.
That is collateral damage.
It punishes people at the point where they have the least power: independent artists, disabled makers, isolated creators, people working outside institutional resources, and people trying to find a voice with whatever tools remain available to them.
Meanwhile, the corporations—the actual owners of the infrastructure—carry on regardless.
Every tool has faced the tribunal
The outrage is not new.
Every time technology changes the conditions of creation, someone stands up and declares that the human element has been destroyed.
Printing was condemned because mechanical reproduction threatened the old scarcity of manuscripts and elite control of knowledge. Yet print made texts, images, arguments, and ideas capable of travelling further than the hand-copied page ever could.
Photography was treated as a threat to painting because it could record the visible world with unprecedented speed and precision. Yet painting did not die. It mutated. It became more liberated from the demand to merely reproduce what the eye could see.
Film was not theatre.
Recorded music was not live performance.
The electric guitar was not the acoustic guitar.
The synthesiser was not a piano.
Sampling was not “real” music to those who mistook familiar labour for the only legitimate form of labour.
Digital photography was not film.
Photoshop was not darkroom practice.
The smartphone was not a proper camera.
And yet each new tool became part of the language of art.
Not because the tool was inherently revolutionary, but because people found things to say through it.
I spent years learning photography through physical processes: film, light meters, chemicals, darkrooms, contact sheets, grain, exposure, mistakes that could not simply be undone. There is a material beauty in that discipline, and I will never deny it.
But I also watched digital photography arrive.
I watched people dismiss it as artificial, cheap, fake, effortless, and without soul.
Then I watched artists use it to document their lives, construct worlds, make images that would never have existed otherwise, and place cameras into the hands of people who had previously been excluded by cost, access, and technical gatekeeping.
The tool changed.
The human need to see, remember, document, distort, expose, and create did not.
Where the labour moves
This is the part the anti-AI conversation often misses.
Technology does not necessarily remove labour. More often, it relocates it.
The labour may move from physical execution to conceptual direction.
From manually producing every mark to deciding which marks matter.
From playing every note to arranging sound, selecting sources, shaping rhythm, editing timing, choosing texture, and defining intent.
From holding a camera steady to deciding what should be seen.
From typesetting individual letters to constructing the language that fills the page.
From mastering one difficult craft in isolation to building an entire system of choices across multiple tools.
That does not mean all labour is equal.
It does not mean that skill becomes irrelevant.
It does not mean every output deserves praise because a button was pressed.
It means we need better questions.
Who made the choices?
What were they trying to communicate?
What does the work do?
What does it reproduce?
What does it challenge?
Whose labour has been taken, obscured, credited, paid, or ignored?
Who gains access through this tool?
Who loses control through it?
Those are real questions.
“Was a machine involved?” is not enough.
The privilege of purity
The most infuriating aspect of the current discourse is the privilege buried inside so much of it.
The demand that art must remain purely analogue, traditionally executed, physically performed, or untouched by synthetic systems usually comes from people who have the bodily capacity, time, money, equipment, education, and support to work in those ways.
Not everyone does.
When someone’s hands lock up, when their energy collapses, when their voice weakens, when illness alters what their body can do, when pain dictates the available hours of a day, traditional methods are not simply harder.
They may become inaccessible.
For someone in that position, a synthetic voice may not be a shortcut.
It may be an access route.
Text-to-speech may become an instrument.
Voice transformation may become a form of performance.
Generative tools may help a person assemble fragments of language, sound, image, or movement when conventional routes are blocked by disability, poverty, exhaustion, isolation, or illness.
That does not make the work less human.
It may make the work possible.
When MSUX creates music around the realities of a failing physical system—around the body breaking down, the voice changing, the limits imposed by illness and circumstance—the synthetic element is not an attempt to erase the human.
It is an attempt to keep the human audible.
The idea that this should be dismissed as “slop” by people who refuse to listen is not just shallow; it can be profoundly ableist.
There is no moral superiority in demanding that another person use a route that their body, finances, circumstances, or access needs have made impossible.
The sovereign node
This is why we (Art of FACELESS) are building and publishing from our own sovereign spaces.
Not because we are hiding.
Not because we are afraid of criticism.
But because corporate platforms have turned every cultural exchange into a battle for reaction, visibility, outrage, and monetisable conflict.
Centralised feeds do not reward patience.
They do not reward context.
They do not reward the difficult work of holding two thoughts at once:
That AI can be harmful in its current corporate form.
And that AI-assisted work can still be genuinely human, politically meaningful, aesthetically powerful, and creatively necessary.
Both can be true.
The platforms want a binary.
AI is either salvation or apocalypse.
It is either genius or slop.
It is either the future or the enemy.
But real life is messier than that.
The question is not whether the systems exist. They do.
The question is who owns them, who controls them, who profits from them, what they consume, what they erase, what they enable, and what kinds of culture we decide to make in the space around them.
The future should not be surrendered to corporations.
Nor should it be surrendered to purists who believe the answer to every new tool is to close their eyes and declare the past morally cleaner.
Listen before you judge
You do not have to like the music.
You do not have to trust the companies building these systems.
You do not have to support every use of generative technology.
You should ask difficult questions about data, consent, labour, ownership, environmental cost, accessibility, power, and corporate control.
But if you want to call yourself a critic, begin with the work.
Press play.
Listen to the words.
Hear the choices.
Ask what the artist is doing with the machine.
Ask what the machine makes possible for the artist.
Ask whether the track carries something real.
Ask whether it confronts you, moves you, unsettles you, annoys you, excites you, or reveals a perspective that would otherwise be unheard.
Then argue.
Then disagree.
Then write the review.
But do not confuse refusal with discernment.
Do not confuse panic with principle.
Do not confuse a machine in the process with an absence of humanity in the result.
There may be circuitry in the signal.
There may be computation in the voice.
There may be a vast dissipation machine humming somewhere behind the screen.
But there is still a human heart beating inside it.
And it is still trying to be heard.
